Here’s why you are going to love this applesauce loaf

Think of a classic banana bread but with warm, apple pie flavors. YEP, it’s that good!

It’s full of everything you love about Autumn, but full of ingredients you can find every day of the year. Think apples, cinnamon, pecans, cloves…

Quick is an understatement! You can have the whole bread mixed together and in the oven in 15 minutes. Don’t you just love a small prep time? Me too!

What you need to get started

  • Applesauce—A jar of storebought or homemade applesauce is the base flavor of this quickbread. For this recipe, I use Three Threes Country Style Apple Sauce (. Now, this apple sauce has chunks of apple in it, which I just love. However, if chunks don’t float your boat, a smooth apple sauce will work just perfectly, too!

  • Unsalted Butter. Always unsalted when baking. My go-to is Kerry Gold or Lurpak Unsalted butter.

  • Ground Spices – cinnamon, cloves, ginger

  • Pantry Staples – all-purpose flour, sea salt flakes, white sugar, brown sugar, baking powder

  • Buttermilk. If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can easily DIY by adding the juice of half a lemon to half a cup of milk. Stir and leave for a few minutes to curdle. And now you have buttermilk!

  • Eggs at room temperature

  • Pecans – roughly chopped

  • Vanilla Extract

All the ingredients you need to make a loaf of applesauce bread.

The Nitty Gritty

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius.

  2. Melt the butter.

  3. In a large mixing bowl combine the melted butter and the sugars. Give it a quick mix to combine and add the apple sauce. Stir through.

  4. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, and using a whisk, gently incorporate them into the wet mixture.

  5. Add the baking powder, a teaspoon of sea salt, and half of the flour. Continue using the whisk to gently mix to combine.

  6. Add half of the buttermilk, then the remaining flour, then the remaining buttermilk, stirring through after each addition.

  7. Add the chopped pecans and gently fold in.

  8. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and set aside.

  9. In a small separate bowl, combine the crumble dry ingredients. Give it a quick mix with a fork.

  10. Add the melted butter and, using the fork, combine until mixed through and you get a crumble consistency

  11. Crumble the crumb topping on top of the batter in the loaf pan and pop into the preheated oven for 55 minutes.

Equipment

I cool this easy applesauce bread recipe in my 21cm x 11cm loaf pan, greased with butter and lined with parchment paper.

To get started you’ll need a large bowl, small mixing bowl, mixing spoon/whisk, and measuring tools.  A wire rack comes in handy for when the cake is removed from the pan to cool.

Cooks Notes

When mixing each ingredient into the batter, be sure to gently mix until just combined and no more. To get a nice, dense moist quick bread, we want to incorporate as little air into the mixture as possible.

How to eat

Cut into individual slices and serve with a cup of tea or lunchbox treat!

Storage

To store, wrap in either plastic wrap or store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

Can you freeze it? Yes! Definitely! I freeze individual slices that have been double-wrapped in plastic wrap for up to 4 weeks.

The loaf has a slice cut out of it sitting on a timber board. A small bowl of pecans sit on the board beside.
