18 Easy Dutch Oven Recipes (Dinners, Bread & Desserts)
These easy Dutch oven recipes are some of my favourite things to cook for dinner, from slow-cooked beef stew and tender pot roast to lemon and herb roast chicken. There’s homemade bread for mopping up the gravy, too. We take that part seriously around here.
On a cold, weekend morning, when the fire’s crackling away, and the windows are fogged up, I love nothing more than popping a big, cast-iron Dutch oven on and letting it work its magic for a few hours in the oven. It’s super easy, and makes the whole house smell dreamy – it’s the “warm the cockles of your heart” kind of cooking.
We’re talking some of my favorite Dutch oven recipes for dinner that bring you all the cozy comfort food you need this time of year. Tender roasts, rustic stews, crusty loaves of homemade bread, and one-pot wonders that don’t ask much of you beyond tossing everything in and letting the pot do the heavy lifting. They’re the perfect supper for any day of the week. Total bonus… you’ll probably have leftovers for lunch tomorrow!

If you’re new here, you might not know I also run a small online store where I keep many of the tools I cook with every day, along with a few timeless homewares for good, slow living…
Here’s Why You’ll Love These Dutch Oven Recipes
- One-pot meals, baby! With many of these recipes, everything cooks in your trusty Dutch oven, which means fewer dishes to do once dinner’s done. Who doesn’t want less washing up?!
- Oh-so cozy. These recipes are the definition of comfort food – hearty, warming, and made for cozy, cold evenings by the fire. Don’t forget the wine.
- Less hovering over the stove. Many start with a little chopping and browning before the oven takes over. Slow cooking takes time, but it doesn’t need your attention every minute.
- Dinner today, a head start for tomorrow. From roasts to stews to breads, there’s something here for everyone (even my meat and three veg Dad!). As a bonus, because most of my Dutch oven recipes serve 6-8 people, there might be some leftovers for the week ahead (or in our case, a freezable night shift dinner or two!).
- More ways to use your Dutch oven. From a Sunday roast to soup, curry, or a loaf of bread, there’s plenty here to keep that beautiful pot busy. No complicated steps or chef-only skills needed around here, just real, good food you can make at home.
What Dutch oven size do I use?
My 24cm Le Creuset enamelled cast iron Dutch oven is the pot I reach for most often. It gets plenty of use for family stews, soups and pasta sauces, although for larger roasts I will size up to a 26 or 28cm.
You don’t need the same brand to cook these recipes. Check the equipment notes in each recipe for the pot size I use, particularly for bread, whole chickens, and larger cuts of meat. Capacity matters here – a pot that comfortably holds a soup won’t necessarily fit your Sunday roast!
If you’re a bit unsure which size will suit you best, my Dutch oven size guide will help you choose.
